What's your spread!

I have to say, I’m mostly a Bourbon gal, but a good starter whiskey for the young (hopefully but most of the time not) 21 year old whiskey starter would be a few things:

  • Johnny Walker Red is always good for a beginner. Its well known and in most bars, plus there are a ton of variations which is easy to show how one name can make a variety of whiskeys at different ages.
  • Makers Mark bourbon is also a good whiskey for beginners if you want to get more into Bourbons than Scotches. The only issue that I have with a beginner starting on Scotches is that there are so many from so many areas, that sometimes its nice to start with the youngest (American) whiskey. And makes is easy and soft. Its not so harsh that it would scare away a new comer, and then after that I would try a Basil Hayden. Another reason Makers is a good beginners whiskey is because most bars will carry it.

For special occasions I whip out the good stuff

  • The Dalmore 1263 King Alexander III- long name, but one of my all time favorite whiskeys and for sure my all time favorite Scotch. Now, I will warn you, this scotch can run all the way up to about $250 a bottle. But its like the nectar of the Gods. Its got this amazing almost sweet honey taste to it with NO bite at all. What makes it kind of neat is that they used to make it is French wine barrels, sherry butts, port pipes AND bourbon casks. UM. HELLO? So good. So good its like, naughty. But this is like “oh man i just gave birth to my frist son” occasion whiskey.

And for any time whiskey, I know i say this over and over again but i have to go with my favorite

  • Elijah Craig 12 year. Its well rounded, its cheap, its great to keep on the shelf for any time, all the time, whenever time.  Its great to mix with and make old fashions or any other whiskey cocktail. Its just a classic a little sweet, a little smoke… good stuff to come home to.
